Soil Type
On the upper blocks we have the Nekia and Gelderman soils, that are no more than 4 feet deep, on a bedrock of uplifted red basalt that has become fractured. Here, where the soils are the shallowest, grapes express more mineral, savory and floral qualities than on deeper soils. On the lower blocks, we see a predominance of local sediments and deeper volcanic soils, of the more famous Jory type, from 4-8 feet deep by definition. The fruit here is more abundant and yields wines with more expression of juicy red cherries and rose petal aromas, with a modicum of mineral and savory expression.
